Kitchen and Wardrobe Renovation Tips & Tricks
Renovating your home can be a positive and exciting time for some and other times you find yourself curled up in a corner crying. We want all our customers to have as much fun as possible with their renovation so we thought we’d give you a few tips and tricks in making a renovation a positive experience and even save you a few dollars along the way.
Firstly a quick brief about what Bentley’s does and what we can help you with.
Bentley’s Wardrobes & Kitchens has been evolving since late 2013. We began our journey with installing wardrobes and expanding into kitchens, laundries, media units and custom cabinetry. We now assist with not only the basic cabinetry but appliances, stone, splashbacks & additional trades to complete the process.
We pride ourselves on our quality, knowledge and friendly service. We know renovating is hard, we know you’ve just spent two hours at the paint shop looking at hundreds of “white” paint samples and you are exhausted. Don’t worry Nutrition station is next door and they have coffee.
Plan! Plan! Plan!
Find some time with no distractions and allow about 30 minutes to 1 hour to plan what you would like to complete, what the styles you like and dislike, products you wish to use and how much cash you have to play with. This 30 minutes now is going to save you hours in the showroom.
Remember with planning to take photos of what you like and dislike and try it keep the search engine focused on Australian websites; as much as we love overseas products and ideas, sometimes you cannot source the product here or you are paying way too much.
Get realistic in your budget
We’ve worked out what we can spend, now you need to know what you can buy. Typically melamine and laminate are your standard or budget range while polyurethane and stone are your high end or expensive range. Choosing a coloured melamine will affect your pricing, usually increasing it by 80%-150%.
A standard kitchen size similar to our showroom display you would be looking between $10,000-$15,000 for a white melamine cupboards and laminate benchtop or $20,000-$40,000 for polyurethane cupboards a stone benchtop.
Products that are custom to your home or needs such as media units or a desk will usually come in at a higher price than those which are bought from a retail chain. We are creating a one off, quality product compared to a factory line making hundreds in a short space of time.
I really enjoy having a customer visit our showroom before the quote, it allows me to get an idea of what they are looking for and they get to have a feel for us as a company and the products we offer, and ask any questions, from here you can book a quote knowing this company has the products you want or need and you not going to waste your time.
Do you need a trade?
If you are considering a major renovation which you’ll be replacing multiple areas and/or changing the layout of your home, it may be in your best interest to hire a builder to assist in the planning and execution of the build, especially if you don’t have experience within the industry. We work with many builders within our local community who specialise in small renovations.
If you are planning on overseeing the renovation yourself, make sure you have all the work such as walls, windows, walkways and plaster done before flooring and cabinetry so we don’t need to check measure saving you time. Let your trade know if you change something once they have completed the measure, something as simple as removing flooring can impact a wardrobe dramatically and can cost the customer hundreds or even thousands of dollars to rectify. We work off millimetres and even the smallest amount can make a difference.
Don’t be cheap on the trades! Spend the extra money and pay for a licensed trade, especially when you’re working with electricity or water. Hire the professionals
Don’t be shy, discounts apply!
Many companies will give discounts for cash or a bulk job so don’t be afraid to ask if they can do any better, the worse that can happen is they say “no”. Remember the slow seasons for an even better price, usually the period before EOFY and the cold snap coming into winter are a slow time for business’ make the most of it and squeeze a few dollars off that price!
