How To Restore An Old TV Cabinet
Fancy the vintage look in your home? Then you might want to take your existing furniture and refurbish it. If a piece of old furniture is restored correctly, it can look beautiful, trendy and full of character. Here are some tips on how to revive a TV cabinet.
Before You Begin
Before you start, you will need to determine whether the furniture needs to be stripped. It might have been painted to hide stains, cracks or other imperfections or it might need regluing. Some pieces of furniture only need a facelift with a new coat of varnish, while others will need to be rebuilt completely. If your TV cabinet has rings or watermarks, chipping or flaking or a cracked finish, it’s the perfect candidate for restoration. All you need to do is follow these simple steps:
Clean the cabinet. Remove all grime, dust or dirt from the corners and seams. Use a sponge and warm water, with regular dish soap.
Inspect the TV cabinet thoroughly. This will give you a good idea on which tools and supplies you’ll need – for example, glue, sandpaper, wood filler, epoxy putty and varnish.
Remove the old varnish or paint. You can use a chemical stripper, belt sander or sandpaper to do this. It is also important to either move with strokes in the same direction over the entire cabinet or to move in the same direction of the grain.
Seal the wood and then stain it. Apply a layer of sealant to protect the wood and to seal in the stain or paint you will use. There are water-based, gel-based and oil-based stains available. Apply an even coat to the TV cabinet until you have the desired darkness and colour.
Apply a finish. You can choose any finish, from a wipe-on varnish to oil or polyurethane. After the finish has adequately dried, apply a thin layer of paste wax to prevent scratches or marks to the surface, and to enhance the inner shine of the wood.
